Elementary Language Immersion School

Fostering a Lifetime Love of Learning and Language

Research studies show children are more likely to become fluent in a language if exposed to it before they turn ten years old. However, traditional public schools do not offer second-language learning opportunities until middle school. At the Foreign Language Immersion School, we take advantage of this language-learning window to develop academically exceptional students who demonstrate fluency in Spanish, English, French, and Chinese.

About the Foreign Language Immersion School

Our teacher-led, advanced academic curriculum for grades K through 5 offers engaging academic instruction, electives, and special subjects in four developmental languages. With small class sizes and engaged teachers, children learn at developmentally appropriate levels and are given personalized resources and encouragement to excel in challenging areas.

Children exposed to multiple languages learn at an accelerated rate and show increased performance in all academic subjects. For this reason, our curriculum operates one full grade level ahead of traditional public schooling.

Amplify Learning Through Language

We believe in developing academic and multi-language skills at the same time. We create an environment where students can organically connect and interact with each language in a concrete and meaningful way. This holistic approach is similar to how children learn their first language. By 2nd grade, your child will read, write, and communicate in English, Spanish, French, and Chinese. By 5th grade, your child will write paragraphs in multiple languages and participate in national language competitions.

Measuring Proficiency

Our immersion school embraces high academic standards and offers an accelerated curriculum that prepares students to compete academically with peers in Florida, nationally, and internationally. Students are tested on language knowledge using examinations designed by the countries where each language is spoken natively. For instance, we use the Young Chinese Test (YCT), which students must pass if they wish to study abroad in China. In addition, many of our students compete in the national French competition, Le Grand Concours. Our school has received the highest reward at this competition five years in a row. We use high-school-level educational standards to measure proficiency in Spanish.

Daily Schedule

Our elementary curriculum builds upon the language-learning foundations set in our immersion preschool program as students progress from kindergarten into 5th grade. Here’s what a typical day at our elementary immersion school looks like:

Kindergarten – 2nd Grade

Lower elementary grades follow an 80/20 immersion model, with 80% of instruction in Spanish and 20% in English. Classroom materials such as textbooks are provided in Spanish, while homework is in English.

3rd – 5th Grade

Upper elementary grades follow a 50/50 immersion model, with instruction split between English and Spanish. Students receive 90 minutes of daily English Language Arts instruction, covering the five components of literacy: phonemic awareness, phonics, vocabulary, reading fluency, and reading comprehension. Subjects like math, science, and social studies follow an 80/20 model. Classroom materials alternate daily between Spanish and English, progressing forward with subject material.

All Grades

French and Chinese are taught daily for 45 minutes as a second-language elective, along with 30 minutes of Spanish instruction focusing on writing and grammar. Other special area classes include PE, art, and computer lab. Elementary students have daily outdoor brain breaks (weather permitting) in addition to their daily PE class.
